77 percent of the children who drowned had been seen 5 minutes or less before being missed and subsequently discovered in the pool. Supervision is always your primary layer of pool safety protection, but as the study shows, 69 percent of the drowning incidents occurred when parental supervision failed and there were no other “backup layers” in use. Access doors to the pool area with high locks are a secondary layer of pool safety protection. Alarms on access doors are another layer of protection. A pool fence separating the pool from your home and all access doors and entrances is one more layer of protection. Alarms both in the pool (pool alarm) and worn on the child (personal immersion alarm). Water survival training for a child when he is capable of crawling or walking to the pool. CPR and your knowledge of rescue techniques are a final layer of protection should there be an accident. The goal, with instituted layers of protection, is to come as close to a “fail safe” system of preventing drowning incidents as possible. This way, if there is a momentary lapse of supervision for whatever reason, we have several backup systems in place. All must fail before a drowning can take place. A door has been left unlocked or open, the alarm system or device for the door has been turned off, the pool safety fence has been left open, your child does enter the water, the pool and personal immersion alarms fail or aren’t heard, the child panics and does not attempt to utilize survival swim training, and CPR is administered too late to save the child. Set down definite pool rules covering its use and more importantly, when it is not in use. We all have a tendency to give a little leeway on this or that with our children, but not when it comes to the pool. THERE CAN BE NO COMPROMISE ON POOL SAFETY. YOU ARE DEALING, LITERALLY, WITH A LIFE AND DEATH SITUATION. Any door leading to the pool area should be kept locked. Even if your home is equipped with an alarm system that will beep when perimeter doors are opened, install simple contact alarms on the more often used doors as a further safeguard. Pool Guard and Safety Turtle, for example, make excellent alarms designed strictly for access doors and gates to the pool area. Door and gate alarms must have the button (adult bypass switch) pushed whenever the door is opened. Door alarms require either a second bypass switch and or a 7 second delay to inhibit adult alarming in both directions. A door alarm is particularly useful if you have older children who open doors to the pool area. Sliding glass doors should be locked at the top in addition to other locks. In two thirds of the drowning cases studied where children were thought to be in the home, sliding glass doors were either left open or opened by the toddler. NO DOGGY DOORS! THEY ARE ATTRACTIVE TO CHILDREN AND HAVE BEEN IMPLICATED IN DOZENS OF TODDLER DROWNINGS! If you own a pool this is a must! A POOL SAFETY FENCE THAT LIVES UP TO ITS NAME. An unprotected pool is over one-hundred times more dangerous to your child than a loaded gun (Freakanomics, 2005). Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children under five in several states, beating out all others, including car accidents and disease. The safety of your family leaves no room for compromise. You wouldn’t buy a car without a seatbelt. You shouldn’t have a pool without a pool safety fence. Likewise, when it comes to your child, you wouldn’t choose just any surgeon or bicycle helmet. But statistics show this choice is even more critical. This isn’t a car alarm. It isn’t a lock on your door. This is the pool fencing that will keep your children safe from your home’s greatest danger. PROVEN TO SAVE LIVES. EVERY DAY. 30 YEARS AND COUNTING. Pool safety experts and lawmakers have recognized Life Saver’s mesh pool fencing as the premium layer of protection against toddler drowning – surpassing pool nets, alarms, and pool covers in terms of safety AND convenience. Life Saver Pool Fence is recommended and approved by national and local governments, not only in the United States, but also around the world. With ongoing third-party testing adhering to strict international standards behind it, Life Saver Pool Fence Systems has consistently exceeded all pool barrier code requirements throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Fencing & Pool Safety

  • How strong is the Life Saver Pool Fence?

All mesh pool fences, especially the Life Saver Pool Fence, is stronger than it looks. Check out this GIF of a dude throwing a bowling ball at it. The mesh is rated to withstand 387 lbs. per square inch, and each individual pole has been tested to withstand over 105 lbs. of horizontal pressure at 36 inches above grade. The pole strength becomes exponentially higher when attached to the mesh and other poles. In short, it’s really tough stuff.

  • Do you have a Warranty?

Every component of every Life Saver Pool Fence around every pool in the 15 countries where they exist is covered by our lifetime warranty. As long as the original owner owns the fence, you are covered. And we cover everything besides acts of God like nuclear bombs, hurricanes, tsunamis, and very excited Great Danes – even your floorboards and dining room table aren’t safe from an ambitious enough Fido.

  • What kind of fence do you need for an inground pool?

You need a Life Saver Pool Fence, preferably 4 feet high, with a self-closing, self-latching gate. The fence should isolate the pool from the backyard; if possible, you should only have to open it to access the pool.

  • Do you have self-latching, self-closing gates?

We do. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, and many others agree that a self-closing, self-latching gate is a necessity for your pool fence, and we are proud to offer the best and most reliable gate available.

  • What surfaces can you install pool fences into?

A pool fence can be installed on any substantial surface or earth.

  • Can you install a pool fence over an above-the-ground pool? / Does pool fencing work on above-ground pools?

Pool fences can be installed around an above-ground pool just like any other pool. It can be used to completely surround an above-ground pool or be installed on a deck surrounding it. We do not recommend attaching a pool fence to an above-ground pool; it should be installed 2-3’ away from the side wherever possible.

  • Can a child lift the poles out of the holes?

No, they can’t. When the fence is installed properly, and all of the latching hardware is connected, the force of the tension keeps the fence tight and makes it impossible for a child five years of age or younger to pull the poles out of the holes.

  • What is your pool fence installation process?

Our trained installers will lay the fence on the path you both decided upon. After making the layout, the installer will drill holes 1-1/8” in diameter and 4” deep. A plastic sleeve will be placed into each hole, and the pool fence will eventually be erected using those holes. The fence will be latched together at the end of each section, and if one is purchased, the self-closing, self-latching gate will be assembled and installed.

  • Can a child climb over or knock down your pool fence?

The fence is intended to deter children under five from accessing the pool. The vast majority of children who drown are between one and four years old, the age group where drowning is the number one cause of accidental death. Because of the mesh construction, there are no hand or foot holds a child can use to climb it. Sure, with enough time, a child 5+ years old could drag over a piece of patio furniture and eventually get over the fence. But in this scenario, you gain the most important resource in the world: time. Time can mean the difference between being healthy, permanently disabled, or lost completely. The pool fence is not intended to replace adult supervision and should be used as one of many layers of protection.

Each pole has a strength rating of over 100 pounds horizontal force at 36” above grade. A child should not be able to knock over the fence.

  • What are the different pool fence types you offer?

*Patented solid pole construction with a strength rating of over 100 pounds of horizontal force at 36” above grade

    *Y-pole extrusion

  • What colors of pool fences do you offer?

Black, brown, copper vein, green, and white with a nearly infinite number of combinations of those colors.

  • How should I clean and maintain my fence?

The fence should be cleaned with a mild detergent, and the sleeves should be rinsed out periodically. You can also check the latches regularly for proper operation.

  • Do you have pet fences?

Yes, we can get custom height fencing made just for your pet.
